Cherry Tomatoes: Pearly round or plum-shaped, tangy or sweet, red or gold, cherry tomatoes top off summer salads, sweeten party trays, and treat the kids.

Heirloom Tomatoes: Heirloom or heritage tomatoes are an open-pollinated (non-hybrid) heirloom cultivar. They usually have a shorter shelf life and are less disease resistant than hybrids bred to resist against specific diseases. They are grown for a variety of reasons, such as access to wider varieties, for their taste, and by people who wish to save seeds from year.

Container Tomatoes: While these tomatoes can be grown in containers, you should still follow these simple tips: place pots where they’ll receive at least six hours of sun; choose a pot that is big enough; use premium quality potting soil; add support; and water regularly.

Check out this ACES publication for more information.

Determinate Tomatoes: Sometimes called “bush tomatoes,” they are bred to grow to a compact height – approximately 4 feet. Other characteristics include: plants stop growing when fruit sets on the top bud; all the fruit ripens at or near the same time (usually over a 2 week period); and can be grown in a container.

Indeterminate Tomatoes: Sometimes called “vining tomatoes,” they will grow and produce until killed by frost. Six feet is the norm but can reach up to 10’. They will bloom, set new fruit, and ripen all at the same time throughout the growing season. They will require caging and/or staking for support and are not recommended for containers.
